中村吉右衛門家の紋が蝶なので、それにちなんでのお洒落。素敵ですね。 私たち観客も、好きな役者さんの衣裳や紋にちなんで、きものや帯、帯留などに、今月の「伊賀越道中双六」ならトンボや蝶のモチーフをさりげなくあしらって観劇できたらお洒落です。

The full-length play “Igagoe Dochu Sugoroku” (Araki Masaemon and Vendetta at Iga Ueno) at the National TheatreThe full-length play “Igagoe Dochu Sugoroku is now playing at the National Theatre through March 27. The play which is performed as of now is one of the three famous revenge stories alongside “Soga Brothers” and “Chushingura” in Japanese history. For the first time in 44 years, the full length play of “Igagoe Dochu Sugoroku” is gaining interest and held as the 50th anniversary of the National Theatre. This story started with the murder of Otani and Shizuma’s father and their family heirloom sword was stolen by Matagoro, and then Masaemon (Otani’s husband) and Shizuma pursued Matagoro. This vendetta story is organized like the board game Sugoroku, a backgammon like game where players move along a road. In this case, each act is like a stop on the great Tokaido highway between Edo and Kyoto and the destination is Iga Ueno where the final vendetta took place. Some comical scenes added different tastes to this play. This performance features an encore performance of the Okazaki scene, a grim and complex scene, in which Shizuma masquerades as Matagoro and Masaemon is forced to kill his own child to establish their false identities. Even if I look this scene many times, it is shocking. There are some aspects which the present-day people cannot understand and agree in this play, but actors completely perform the roles and express the characters’ anguish, grief and the great decision, so they made the audience unconsciously be deep in the story. At the end, finally the vendetta was achieved. In the fighting scene, Nakamura Kichiemon (plays the role of Masaemon) wears the dragonfly designed hakama-trousers. A dragonfly is known as “victory insect’ because it never flies backwards, therefore people used the design on the helmet or armor. Masaemon might put on dragonfly designed hakama to pray the victory in the vendetta. This is not a dragonfly but a butterfly. It is a kind of sharemon (special designed family crest) on the back of Kichiemon’s wife, Mrs. Chisa Namino’s kimono, and the design comes from the family crest of Nakamura Kichiemon. It is so sophisticated. If we elegantly put on some butterfly or dragonfly design on kimono, obi or obidome (brooch on obi) while watching” Igagoe Dochu Sugoroku,” it will look fashionable.
